A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
When my kids were young, I limited screen time. Mr. Rogers was one of the programs we welcomed into our home. So, I went to see the movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, last night. It is not a children’s movie, but It is a most brilliant take on how Fred Rogers made everyone he touched want to be a better person. Based on a true story, a cynical, journalist, Lloyd Vogel, is given an assignment with Esquire Magazine to write a short hero piece on children’s TV personality, Fred Rogers. Fully expecting a fake, Lloyd discovers that Rogers really is a hero. Not a superhero sort, but the kind of man who has dedicated his life both on and off screen to helping others (especially children) deal with feelings. Mr. Rogers penetrates Lloyd’s journalistic mask to expose and help heal a deep-seeded hurt that stems from Lloyd’s childhood. Tom Hanks could not have been better in the role of Fred Rogers. The movie is so good that it’s even worth sitting through the half hour of commercials regularly screened at cinemas today. Director, Marielle Heller’s work is superb and so is everything else about this film, including the writing. The only thing you have to lose is your cynicism. See it today. #film #recommendation #writinglife
